And The Winners of the 2012 Inventor and Innovator of the Year Awards Are…

It is with great honor and pleasure that the UIC Office of Technology Management (OTM) is proud to announce that Dr. Mahnaz Shahidi has been named the 2012 UIC Inventor of the Year and Dr. Craig Niederberger the 2012 UIC Innovator of the Year. The OTM would like to offer congratulations to this year’s Inventor and Innovator of the year award recipients. We would also like to offer our profound thanks to all those who submitted nominations. There was a remarkable collection of nominees for this year's awards. The transformative and inspiring ideas represented in the nominations remind us of the outstanding innovation occurring on the UIC campus.


Dr. Mahnaz ShahidiInventor of the Year Award:
Dr. Mahnaz Shahidi

The Inventor of the Year Award honors an outstanding inventor or team of inventors who have made a contribution to the development of intellectual property at the University of Illinois at Chicago and has the potential to make a significant impact. Dr. Shahidi’s invention, an optical imaging device (EyeFlow) that measures blood flow in the conjunctiva of the eye, stood out as one of the most impactful inventions of the nominations submitted. The EyeFlow device has the potential to significantly impact health care by providing a cost effective means to diagnose and screen for the risk of stroke, the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of severe long-term disability in the United States.

 

 

Dr. Craig NiederbergerInnovator of the Year Award: Dr. Craig Niederberger

The Innovator of the Year Award honors an outstanding innovator or team of innovators at University of Illinois at Chicago who through their efforts have contributed to significantly advancing their invention towards commercialization. This award recognizes outstanding commitment either through participation in the licensing process or through entrepreneurial efforts in a startup company based on their invention. The committee has selected Dr. Craig Niederberger, Department of Urology, as this year’s Innovator of the Year. Dr. Niederberger is one of the inventors of a medical device that accurately measures the force applied to the urethra and the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of the company NexHand that is developing the invention for use in the surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence in women.

 

Selection Criteria

An internal University committee served in selecting the UIC Inventor and Innovator of the Year Awards. The Committee was made up of members from diverse disciplines, many of whom are distinguished university professors. The Committee reviewed all nominations and deliberated on whom has shown outstanding commitment in developing a groundbreaking invention.

The Committee will reviewed nominations and made their selection based on the following criteria for Inventor of the Year:

  • The nominee’s invention has potential  to significantly impact and bring value to their field and society;
  • The nominee’s contribution to, and influence on, the University and field;
  • The nominee’s performance, creativity, and commitment demonstrated throughout the invention process;
  • The invention’s potential for further development and commercialization/adoption.

The Committee reviewed nominations and made their selection based on the following criteria for Innovator of the Year:

  •  The nominee’s invention has impact and brings value to their field and society;
  • The nominee’s contribution to, and influence on, the University and field;
  • The nominee’s performance, creativity, and commitment demonstrated throughout the commercialization process;
  • The invention’s potential for further development and commercialization/adoption.

 The Award Ceremony

The 2012 Inventor of the Year and Innovator of the Year honorees will each receive a one-time $3,500 net cash prize and a commemorative award, which will be presented to them at an Award Ceremony to be held in partnership with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research’s 2012 UIC Researcher of the Year Award, on February 20th, 2013. In addition, the name of the award recipient will be added to a distinguished group of recipients of this award on the Inventor of the Year Award Recipients plaque and all-new Innovator of the Year Award plaque which are prominently displayed in the hallway of the UIC Office of Technology Management.
