Recertification
DEEP™ Recertification Process
DEEP™ trainers are first certified after a successful training for an initial three (3) year period.
At the end of the initial three (3) year certification period, DEEP™ trainers and/or their organizational leadership will need to complete and return a Recertification Application, Training Tracker Worksheet, and Recertification Attachment A, and fee(s).
At the end of the initial three (3) year certification period, DEEP™ trainers can choose to renew their certification for one (1), two (2), or three (3) years.
To be recertified without having to attending a refresher DEEP™ workshop, Senior Trainers, Lead Trainers, and Peer Educators must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Senior Trainers: Must conduct at least two (2) workshops for Lead Trainer candidates and one (1) workshop for Peer Educator candidates over three years and submit a request for recertification along with the appropriate fee. At least one of these workshops must occur in the last twelve (12) months before applying for re-certification.
- Lead Trainers: Must serve as the primary or co-facilitator in at least four (4) Peer Educator workshops in the three (3) year certification period. At least one (1) of those workshops must occur in the last twelve (12) months before applying for re-certification.
- Peer Educators: Must serve as the primary or co-facilitator in at least five (5) DEEPTM workshops or facilitate workshops for a total of 50 patients in the three (3) years following certification. At least one of these workshops must occur in the last twelve (12) months before applying for re-certification. Certified Peer Educators or the organizations which employ them (or with which they are affiliated) must submit lists of entities for which they conducted workshops, number of attendees, and dates of the workshops along with a request for recertification and the appropriate fee. These lists may be submitted quarterly, semi-annually, annually, or at the end of the three (3) year period.
Senior Trainers, Lead Trainers, and Peer Educators may re-certified for one (1), two (2), or three (3) years. The fees for re-certification are below.
The applicable Initial Three(3) year Certification Fees are as follows:

Important Notes
During the period of 2019 – 2021, DEEP™ certification and recertification fees were “temporarily suspended,” by Midwest Latino Health Research, Training and Policy Center while DEEP™ transitioned to UIC’s Office of Technology Management (OTM). As of January 1, 2022, OTM is requiring all DEEP™ Educators and Trainers that were newly trained or whose certification expired in 2021 to retroactively pay for those certifications or recertifications
It is UIC policy to not issue certificates/certifications until payment is received for recertification.
At the moment, UIC only accepts payment through wire transfer and check.
